Abstract:

Egide Niyomugabo, a boy from Cellule Sunzu, Nyakogo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, was 13 years old when the 1994 Rwanda Genocide began. He describes how he escaped to Karambi Catholic Parish with his siblings on April 20, 1994, when his neighborhood was attacked. A Catholic priest chased them away from Karimbi Parish and they went to Buhanda, then to Byimana, and finally to an elementary school in Kabgayi. Egide observed Tutsis' cows slaughtered and feasted on by gangs who were carrying clubs and spears. He also observed seminary students among the gang members. Egide and others found safety at Kabgayi, where the refugees were guarded by two policemen and fed by the Red Cross and Red Crescent; however, the policemen were later forced to leave. On June 1, 1994, Interahamwe arrived to kill all the Tutsi at Kabgayi but before they could attack, RPF Inkotanyi arrived and and saved all the refugees, mostly women, children, and the elderly. They were then taken to Bugesera.
