About Gitarama Prefecture
Gitarama Prefecture was established in 1959 and was one of the 12 prefectures of Rwanda at the time the genocide in 1994. Each prefecture was further subdivided into administrative structures known as Communes, which were then subdivided into Sectors and the each Sector was broken down to Cellule. Gitarama Prefecture was made up of the following 17 communes each headed by a Bourgumestre: Rutobwe; Musambira; Ntongwe; Nyamabuye; Mukingi; Kayenzi; Mushubati; Bulinga; Nyabikenke; Taba; Runda; Murama; Tambwe; Kigoma; Masango; Mugina; Nyakabanda.
