Rose Namahirwe, a girl from Nyamirembe Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how her family’s livestock and crops were looted and feasted upon by attackers on April 18, 1994. At the same time, the slaughter of Tutsis in her village began. Rose hid in a millet farm and witnessed people being slashed to death by machete. Rose was discovered and arrested by a gang that used dogs to track Tutsis. All of her clothes and money were taken away, but she was released and escaped to Kabgayi. She then describes how life was difficult for refugees in Kabgayi.
