Abstract:

Gildas Magera, a boy from Rubona Sector of Commune Kigoma in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how his neighborhood was attacked on April 25, 1994. Civilians from Kiruri Sector armed themselves with stones, sticks, and clubs and fought Interahamwe. Gildas' paternal uncle killed seven members of the Interahamwe gang. However, the Interahamwe brought in armed reinforcements and overpowered the civilians. Gildas hid in the hillside and witnessed Tutsis being forced to pay to have their lives spared. He hid in many places until he was rescued by RPF Inkotanyi and taken to Ruhango and then to Bugesera.
