Abstract:

Athanasie Ingabire, a girl from Cellule Murambi, Bibungo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how her neighborhood was attacked and burned on April 17, 1994. Athanasie's family fled and sought refuge in a church; the only posession that they were left with was a reed mat. Her family escaped again after the church was attacked, but they were beaten and threatened with clubs and machetes. Athanasie was later arrested and beaten again. She describes how she was saved by RPF Inkotanyi and taken to Bugesera. By the time genocide ended, Athanasie was crippled from the multiple attacks that she had survived. She also faced many challenges in school as a result of trauma.
