Abstract:

Joseph Niyigenga, a boy from Mukasa of Cellule Sunzu, Nyakogo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how he sought refuge during the Rwandan Genocide with other Tutsi in a church and was chased away. The refugees escaped to Rusizi and later moved to Kabgayi. Joseph explains how Tutsi were forced to give up all of their money as a bribe to save their lives. Genocide perpetrators set up barriers along major escape routes in order to kill Tutsi. Armed soldiers later came to Kabgayi, took away many refugees, and killed them. Joseph's testimony describe how the International Red Cross and Red Crescent were instrumental in feeding refugees who had camped at Kabgayi.
