Abstract:

Claudine Semana, a girl from Cellule Kiyanja, Rwoga Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, provides a list of the people she knew who were killed during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, and she describes the challenges that children who were orphaned during the genocide faced. She also describes how gangs attacked her village and slaughtered Tutsis' cowsi. Other attrocities that she witnessed include genocide perpetrators insulting Tutsi by saying that they were snakes; they also killed thousands of Tutsi and moderate Hutu and threw their bodies in the Nyabarongo River. Children were also killed as they were considered "the eggs of the snakes." Some women were killed while carrying their children on their backs; their killers then threw the women's bodies into pit latrines along with their children who were still alive. Other Tutsi were humiliated by being forced to underess and left to walk naked on the road.
