Abstract:

Rose Uwimana, a girl from Cellule Buhanda, Nyakogo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how her brothers were killed in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. She also explains that it was around April 22, 1994, that many Tutsi refugees passed through her Commune, most of whom were seeking refuge in Kabgayi. After being told that one of her sisters had been arrested after surviving an attempted drowning in the Nyabarongo River, Rose decided to escape and hide in the bush. Later, she joined her family and they all hid at the Buhanda shopping center before heading to Murama. Despite their repeated attempts to find a safe hiding place, they were unsuccessful and eventually returned to Buhanda. Rose describes how people passed information on where the gangs were going to attack, thereby helping some Tutsi, including Rose, to escape. Rose was arrested and bribed the gang with all her money. On June 26, 1994, she was saved by RPF Inkotanyi and taken to Ruhango. Rose concludes by explaining how she was reunited with some of her family members who had survived the genocide.
