Abstract:

Clarisse Mwitende, a girl from Cellule Rusizi, Nyakogo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how her neighborhood was attacked on April 14, 1994 by gangs that came blowing whistles and stoning homes. Together with some family members, she managed to escape to Buha, but they were chased away. They decided to go to Rubona and she witnessed rowdy gangs from Ruhango being ferried in vehicles and armed with spears and clubs. In Buhenda, a gang burned homes using gasoline they had come with. At Buhenda, her mother was arrested by police, whom she had to bribe $1500 to be set free. After the RPF Inkotanyi take over Kabgayi, they got respite from attacks. Clarisse closes with an explanation of the challenges she faced after the genocide.
