Abstract:

Rose Murekatete, a girl from Bugarura Cellule, Muremure Sector, and Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how she sought refuge in her aunt's home and was chased away. She escaped to Kabgayi, then to Bugesera. She recalls how the Rwandan Army came to Kabgayi and took away all the able bodied youth including her two brothers. She later discovered that one of her brothers was slashed to death. She describes how her only surviving brother is now cripple and mentally challenged because the Interahamwe captured him in a convent slashed his head and body with a machete. The gang left him for dead but he was found and rescued. One of Rose's cousins and a paternal uncle were also killed. She concludes her testimony by thanking IBUKA for supporting her education and wonders what her fate could have been. She also relates how she was admitted to École Secondaire Kigoma.
