Abstract:

Alice Uwamahoro, a girl from Shyogwe Sector of Commune Nyamabuye In Gitarama Prefecture, describes how she escaped her neighborhood on April 18, 1994, after it  was attacked. Before Alice fled, some of her relatives sought refuge in her home after they were injured by machetes during early genocidal attacks. Her brother was found by a gang and his leg slashed with a machete. Alice escaped to Kabagayi and sought refuge in a Catholic church, where nuns placed her in an orphange. In Kabgayi, she witnessed refugees being beaten by Interahamwe. Alice relates how life was challenging in Kabgayi: many people died of hunger while others contracted cholera or dysentery. Interahamwe attacked refugees in Kabgayi on June 1, 1994, and the surviving refugees were rescued the following day by RPF Inkotanyi.
