Abstract:

Victorien Uwamungu, a girl from Cellule Kamabuye, Cubi Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how she was warned by a colleague about the coming genocide. After her neighborhood was attacked, Victorien escaped to her grandparents’ home at Cubi in Gitwa. She also went with her family to seek refuge at the offices of Commune Kayenzi and then to her uncle's home in Muganza. They fled again to Musambira and were forced to pay money at a roadblock in order to pass. Victorien's family lived in a stadium in Gitarama Town and then in Kabgayi where there was cholera outbreak and a food shortage. Victorien and her family were rescued by RPF Inkotanyi on June 2, 1994, and taken to Byimana, Ruhango, Ntongwe, Busoro, Rwabusoro, Ruhuha, Kamabuye, and Gako in Gashora.
