Abstract:

Jeanne Mukawera, a girl from Cellule Kibanza, Gihira Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, lists members of the Interahamwe gang that terrorized her village as well as the victims that she knew. She explains how she hid in the bush while her father hid in a millet farm after their home was attacked. She escaped to Musambira to an aunt’s home and witnessed people being thrown into a pit latrine and others being tortured. She vividly recalls the exact date her father was killed and continues to narrate how she escaped with her pregnant mother. They reached Kigoma where her mother gave birth and died shortly thereafter. Jeanne was left to look after the newborn.
