Abstract:

Théodosie Nyirakamana, a girl from Gihira Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how she was orphaned during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. She also describes how more than 32 members of her extended family were killed during the genocide. Théodosie survived by hiding beneath the trunk of a big tree that had fallen on her parents’ farm. She was hunted by Interahamwe who were armed with knives, spears, clubs, and machetes. Interahamwe also threatened to drown her in a river. Théodosie concludes by explaining how she is still ill as a result of diseases she contracted during the genocide.
