However, after the bourgumestre announced a government order for all Tutsi to be killed, Tutsi property was looted and Tutsis were killed in her neighborhood. As Marie Josée's family tried to escape, they were arrested by an Interahamwe gang armed with clubs, machetes, and spears. She witnessed this gang beat her mother and take all of her belongings. Marie Josée remained with her family, and they were ultimately rescued by RPF Inkotanyi.
