1994 Rwandan genocide testimony by Marie Josée Mujawamaliya
Marie Josée Mujawamaliya, a girl from Cellule Kibuye, Marenga Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how Tutsi and Hutu in her cellule worked together to fight the Interahamwe. However, after the bourgumestre announced a government order for all Tutsi to be killed, Tutsi property was looted and Tutsis were killed in her neighborhood. As Marie Josée's family tried to escape, they were arrested by an Interahamwe gang armed with clubs, machetes, and spears. She witnessed this gang beat her mother and take all of her belongings. Marie Josée remained with her family, and they were ultimately rescued by RPF Inkotanyi.
