Abstract:

Emerthe Nyiraneza, a girl from Cellule Munyinya, Rubona Sector of Commune Kigoma in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how Tutsis and Hutus from Kigoma and Mukingi Communes united to fight Interahamwe gangs from Kibuye. The civilians were overpowered and Tutsis were killed and their livestock looted or slaughtered. Emerthe escaped to a banana farm before seeking refuge at her maternal grandparents' home and then at Commune Murama before going to Gitwe where RPF Inkotanyi rescued her.
