1994 Rwandan genocide testimony by Alphonsine Mukankindo
Alphonsine Mukankindo, a girl from Cellule Musenyi, Gahombo Sector of Commune Kigoma in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how roadblocks were erected along many roads so that Tutsis who were trying to escape could be arrested and killed. Alphonsine lists the names of her family members and other people in her neighborhood who were killed. She describes how gangs used hoes, clubs, and sticks to attack Tutsis. She also describes how Tutsis were beaten and their livestock taken away while the wombs of pregnant Tutsi women were ripped open and the women were forced to carry the foetuses.
