Abstract:

Sanoula Uwimana, a girl from Cellule Kovukoranya, Kavumu Sector of Commune Kigoma in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how the presidential guard and the military came to her neighborhood on April 20, 1994, to kill Tutsis. A day later, Interahamwe attacked her neighborhood, looted Tutsi property, and destroyed houses. Sanoula escaped to the bush and then hid in Hutu homes. She witnessed Tutsis being arrested and killed. She was liberated on May 9, 1994, after a large gun battle between RPF Inkotanyi and the government soldiers in the neighborhood where she was hiding.
