Abstract:

Béatrice Mukanyarwaya, a girl from Cellule Buhoro, Dusego Sector of Commune Mukingi in Gitarama Prefecture, starts here testimony by describing the impact of the 1994 Rwanda genocide in a poem. She provides the history of killings that took place in Rwanda from 1959 through 1994. She tells that Mukingi Commune was attacked much later than the killing of Tutsis in Kigali, Kibuye, and Commune Masango. Whenever Tutsis were attacked, Interahamwe came armed with machetes, clubs, and even stones. The Interahamwe raped some women and killed others. Béatrice goes on to describe how Tutsis were killed in different communes and completes her testimony by explaining her wishes for Rwanda, especially in terms of the justice, security, and well-being of genocide survivors.
