1994 Rwandan genocide testimony by Providance Uwizeyimana

Testimony content:
Abstract:

Providance Uwizeyimana, a girl from Cellule Gaseke, Kimegeri Sector of Commune Mukingi in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how Tutsi refugees from Kibuye and Masango started to pass through her neighborhood seeking refuge. She tells that some of the refugees had major wounds inflicted by the Interahamwe. Two days after the death of president Habyarimana, many vehicles from Kigali passed through her neighborhood carrying families of soldiers to safer grounds. By mid-April 1994, the killing of Tutsis had spread from Commune Masongo to her commune. Many people Providance knew were among the first victims and children were attacked and their limbs slashed. All of her family's livestock was looted and their home was razed to the ground by Interahamwe carrying machetes and clubs. The Interahamwe arrested her and others she was escaping with to Kabgayi, but they are saved by a man who knew her family. She was liberated by RPF Inkotanyi on June 12, 1994.
