Sylvain Gato, a boy from Cellule Kanatome, Mahembe Sector of Commune Mukingi in Gitarama Prefecture, explains how genocide perpetrators started erecting roadblock in his commune on April 23, 1994 and how he escaped to his maternal grandparents' home in Mushubati. Other Tutsi Hid in Byimana where the Interahamwe group Simusiga attacked with grenades. After learning that RPF Inkotanyi had liberated Kabgayi and Byimana, he escaped to Byimana where he finally got peace.
