Abstract:

Odile Uwimana,a girl from Cellule Gaseke, Kimegeli Sector of Commune Mukingi in Gitarama Prefecture, lists the names of family members who were killed during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, who killed them, and how they were killed. She also describes how gangs wearing MDR party uniforms attacked her neighborhood on April 17, 1994. The gangs carried various types of weapons, although most were clubs with nails in them. The gangs attacked Tutsi homes and set them on fire; they also killed civilians and threw their bodies into pit latrines. Odile witnessed her father's execution and another relative being tortured, undressed, and beaten by gangs. She was later arrested by a gang, beaten, and told to give the gang money. She was saved by Catholic seminarians who took her to their institution in Bukomero; there, she received care from a Tutsi nun. The institution was attacked by soldiers, but the seminarians took the children into the forest where they joined other refugees. A seminarian then took her to Kabgayi despite the many Interahamwe roadblocks. In Kabgayi, Odile witnessed soldiers shooting people to death; she also saw the Red Cross and Red Cresent attempting to feed the refugees being stopped by the military. On June 2, 1994, RPF Inkotanyi saved Tutsis hiding at Kabgayi, including Odile.
