Abstract:

Daniel Kwizera, a boy from Commune Mugina in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how rumors that Tutsi would be attacked spread at the beginning of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. At first, Daniel's family hid in the hillside at night and returned home during the day. Later, they fled to a church and tried to fight off Interahamwe attackers. After the church was attacked, Daniel fled first to Kabgayi, and then to Mushenyi and Mbuye in Nyamabuye. In Mbuye, he joined a group of Tutsi getting ready to fight off attackers. Due to heightened danger in Nyamabuye, Daniel fled to Mugina and then to Musambira. He was arrested by a gang at Musambira but was later released. On his way to Kabgayi with other refugees, Interahamwe attacked and killed some of his companions. Daniel was arrested again and beaten, but he ultimately made it to Kabgayi where he stayed with other Tutsi refugees for nearly two months before being rescued by RPF Inkotanyi.
