Abstract:

Priscille Mukabaranga, a girl from Commune Mugina in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how her neighborhood was attacked during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Tutsi homes were destroyed, and their livestock was slaughtered. Priscille hid in bushes and banana farms before seeking refuge at Mugina Catholic Parish. After the bourgumestre of Mugina, who shielded Tutsis, was killed, gangs began attacking civilians. Priscille escaped to Kabgayi, but many of the people from her neighborhood were killed by Interahamwe with machetes and clubs at Mugina Parish. After several weeks, Priscille left Kabgayi and sought refuge at Nyabisind, but she was chased back to Kabgayi. She was saved by RPF Inkotanyi on June 2, 1994, and taken to Rurima. Priscille briefly descrbies the challenges she faced after the genocide and her hopes for unity, reconciliation, and justice in Rwanda.
