1994 Rwandan genocide testimony by Marie Grâce Uwera

Testimony content:
Abstract:

Marie Grâce Uwera, a girl from Cyeru Sector of Commune Mugina in Gitarama Prefecture, hid first in a millet farm and then in the Catholic Parish in Mugina after the 1994 Rwandan Genocide began. In the initial days of hiding at the parish, men would sneak out and return to their homes to get food. This practice changed after gangs from Cyeru and Simusiga attacked the parish with grenades, clubs, and machetes. The survivors of this attack sought refuge at Kabgayi, but many were stoned on the journey. Marie Grâce hid in bushes and in the forest before going to Ruyumba, Kiyumba in Commune Nyabikenke, and then Kayenzi where she was saved by RPF Inkotanyi. She was put into a group with other children who were supported by the non-governmental organization ARME du SALU [Armée du Salut, Salvation Army]. Marie Grâce also describes how she was reunited with some of her relatives after the genocide.
