Abstract:

Alphonsine Undimwana, a girl from Mbati Sector of Commune Mugina in Gitarama Prefecture, provides a list of her relatives and how each one was killed during the Rwandan Genocide. Alphonsine's neighborhood was attacked and Tutsi homes were destroyed. When the PAWA, a gang armed with guns, spears, grenades and clubs, attacked her neighborhood, Alphonsine escaped and hid in a church at Mugina. The church was attacked, and Tutsi men unsuccessfully fought back with spears and clubs. Next, the Simusiga, a gang from Nyagahama in Commune Ntongwe, attacked her neighborhood. Alphonsine escaped to Nteko where she was arrested by another gang that intended to drown her in a river. A civilian convinced the gang to release her.
