Abstract:

Marie Chantal Uwineza explains that the 1994 Rwandan Genocide began while she was in Cellule Musenyi, Mbuye Sector of Commune Nyamabuye in Gitarama Prefecture, where her father worked as a Presbyterian minister. On April 14, 1994, Tutsi homes in her neighborhood were set on fire by Interahamwe and Army members. The soldiers came in vehicles that also carried gasoline that was used to torch homes. Some of the Interahamwe were from Giheta and Musambira. Marie Chantal sought refuge in many homes and avoided to staying in one place for too long as she feared that her hideout would be discovered. Sometimes, she hid in the ceiling while the Interahamwe searched the homes where she had hidden. Before she was rescued by RPF Inkotanyi, Marie Chantal sought refuge in Kayenzi, Nyakabuye, and Bitsibo in Musambira.
