Abstract:

Valens Ngabonziza, a boy from Cellule Kinanira, Ngoma Sector of Commune Mugina in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how his family sought refuge at the home of a Catholic priest when the Rwandan Genocide began. When the priest's home was attacked, they escaped to Ngoma where they hid under beds. Valens' family was arrested and his grandmother tried unsuccessfully to bribe the gang with 45,000FRW. Valens escaped to Commune Mbati and then to Nteko Sector with other children. Civilians in Nteko Sector gave Valens food and hid him at a banana farm. Later, RPF Inkotanyi took him to a camp of genocide survivors at Mugina.
