When the priest's home was attacked, they escaped to Ngoma where they hid under beds. Valens' family was arrested and his grandmother tried unsuccessfully to bribe the gang with 45,000FRW. Valens escaped to Commune Mbati and then to Nteko Sector with other children. Civilians in Nteko Sector gave Valens food and hid him at a banana farm. Later, RPF Inkotanyi took him to a camp of genocide survivors at Mugina.
