Abstract:

Martin Gasana, a boy from Cellule Remera, Gitinda Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, provides a list of 233 people he knew that were killed in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. He describes how the genocide started when he was 9 years and how some of his family members escaped to the home of a Hutu neighbor. His family's livestock and that of other Tutsi were looted or slaughtered and feasted on. Together with others on the run, he sought refuge in a school before escaping to the home of one of his aunts who was married to a Hutu. Shortly after, he sought refuge at the church in Munyunzwe Catholic Parish, but the church was attacked and refugees were only saved by the intervention of a catholic priest. Some refugees then sought refuge at Kabgayi but gangs at barriers took all of their money.
