1994 Rwandan genocide testimony by Jerodithe Uwayisenga

Testimony content:
Abstract:

Jerodithe Uwayisenga, a girl from Cellule Gahororo, Muremure Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how she was left an orphan by the genocide. Her nuclear family of 12 people escaped in different directions and tried to seek refuge in Hutu homes to increase the chances of some members of the family surviving. She reunited with her parents and siblings in Commune Murama after a week on the run. Some people who hid Tutsi were the same ones who informed the gangs where Tutsi were hiding. On May 10, 1994, her father was arrested, beaten, undressed, then killed. On the same day, her mother and some of her siblings were killed by neighbors. She was unable to save her family and felt very helpless. In her post genocide life, she hopes that the children who survived genocide are supported to complete their schooling to help them get jobs.
