Abstract:

Damascène Nsabihoraho, a boy from Cellule Remera, Rwesero Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, provides a list of his relatives that were killed and describes how he hid in valleys and by the hillside with other refugees and how they agreed to fight any gangs thatattacked them. On April 15, 1994, a gang from Bwakira attacked Commune Masango but was repulsed by the residents before a second gang armed with guns and gasoline arrived and overpowered the residents. Tutsi homes were set on fire and Damascène sought refuge in a church at Byimana. He was chased away by a catholic priest and had to go to Kabgayi. At Kabgayi, they were rained on and slept in the cold. Later, government soldiers and Interahamwe came to Kabgayi and beat Tutsi men and took away some to kill. He also tells that many refugees also died of disease at Kabgayi.
