Abstract:

Justine Uwimana, a girl from Nyarubumbiro Cellule, Rukina Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how the 1994 genocide started when she was at Muyunzwe. She witnessed the attackers burning homes before she escaped. While escaping, she was attacked by a gang with clubs, bows and arrows, and dogs. She also describes how her father and brother were killed in Commune Murama and how she had to perform forced labor on a farm. At one point, government soldiers arrested her and tried to force her to kill Tutsi. However, she was saved by RPF Inkotanyi after they had a fierce gun battle with the Interahamwe.
