Abstract:

Kananura, a girl from Buhanda Cellule, Nyakogo Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how they had to escape from their home on April 23, 1994 and seek refuge in Commune Murama. Attacks first started in Kibuye and Gikongoro prefectures where Tutsis were killed, their homes burnt, and people drowned in river Kirinda. Refugees from this area sought shelter at Kabgayi. Interahamwe later attacked Comune Murama where refugees fought back, but were overpowered. This forced Kananura to seek refuge in Commune Mukingi where she was reunited with the father. Kananura also tells that children were told to report to schools, but those who did disappeared. She explains that Mukingi was attacked by gangs with guns, but the RPF Inkotanyi eventually saved the refugees and took them to Bugesera.
