Abstract:

Yvone Uwimphuwe, a girl from Rambyanyana Cellule, Karambi Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, provides a list of her family members who were killed in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. She describes how they escaped to Commune Murama but were confronted by a gang. They hid in a cassava field and the gang stoned them. When an old lady surrendered, the gang took her money and released her, but arrested and drowned her the next day. Yvone escaped to Gatovu, then to Buhanda with another girl where Yvone saw the other girl arrested, thrown in a pit latrine three times, and finally killed by a gang that slashed her head with a machete. Alone, Yvone was whipped and her clothes were stolen. In July 1994, she sought refuge in Gikongoro Prefecture and had to lie that she was from Bugesera and was running away from RPF Inkotanyi. She stayed there until 1995 when she returned to Commune Masango an orphan and stayed with a relative.
