Abstract:

Immaculée Nyirahuku, a girl from Karambi Cellule, Karambi Sector of Commune Masango in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how her family escaped and hid in her uncle's shop and later in a thicket. Her family returned home and found that all their livestock and other property and been stolen. A couple of days after the killing started, restaurant owners refused to sell food to Tutsi, referring to them as snakes. Upon learning that the Interahamwe knew their hideout, Immaculée, her parents, and her nine siblings, escaped to Commune Murama. While in Murama and on the way back to Masango, she witnessed some of her brothers being undressed and forced to forced to hand over all of their money before being slashed to death. While in their hideout, her father was slashed by machete and killed with a baby he was holding.
