African Great Lakes Initiative
Mission Statement
The mission of the African Great Lakes Initiative is to provide distinct collections to advance knowledge and teaching; apply lessons from East Africa to build empathy and understanding between cultures; position conflict in the African Great Lakes region squarely in the historical and policy debates about genocide and its prevention; and relate lessons from East Africa to current events in order to identify and prevent the forms of persecution that can lead ultimately to genocide.
Objectives
- To provide researchers with access to in-depth unique primary information resources that has for a long time been hidden to the public about genocide in the African Great Lakes Region.
- To help secure information in rare documents for future generations and to support teachers to incorporate some of the documents in their lessons especially when teaching about genocide.
- To enhance access to information on genocide in the African Great Lakes Region and to preserve it due to the harsh environmental conditions that most of the documents containing the information are stored in.
- To open discussion at the national and international level about genocide and crimes against humanity in the African Great Lakes Region.
