Abstract:

Epiphanie Iyabukesha, a girl from Marenga Sector of Commune Kayenzi in Gitarama Prefecture, describes how a gang from Commune Nyabikenke attacked her neighborhood during the genocide. At first, Hutus and Tutsis living in her neighborhood united and fought back. Tutsi homes were looted and set on fire on April 15, 1994, and her family had to escape and seek refuge at relatives' homes. Some of the refugees were arrested and drowned in a river, and some of Epiphanie's family members were killed and their bodies thrown in pit latrines. After the genocide, Epiphanie reports that some of the people who killed her family members asked for her forgiveness.
